All lanes, shoulders and sidewalks are now open on the new Hwy 84 (Barclay Ave) Norway Brook bridge and road between River St. and 5th St. in Pine River. The City of Pine River will remove the old bridge and dam structure when they install the riffle dam.

Thank you Pine River

MnDOT thanks the community of Pine River for their patience during this 2021 project which included a three month detour.

Summary of work

  • Construct bridge (11011) to span 220 feet over the Norway Brook, just south of old structure
  • Reconstruct and realign Hwy 84 east and west of the bridge, includes road bed and surface, underground storm sewers, utilities and pedestrian sidewalks and shoulders for bicyclists on both sides of Hwy 84
THE BRIDGE PROJECT IN SEQUENCE

PREPARING THE AREA:

 Hauling in equipment & materials.

De-Watering the area was necessary at

certain points of the project with the water

table invading some of the work areas.

STORMWATER SEWER DRAIN

Re-alignment of the existing

Stormwater sewer

drain was necessary to

prepare for the height of the new

bridge, road & surrounding areas.

 NEW WATERMAIN BORING

The old watermain, which was attached to

the old bridge, needed to be relocated.

Special equipment was used to bore

a tunnel for the new watermain from

River Street, under the Pine River,

and over to Hwy 84, near Fifth Street.

Once the pipe was in place, a protective

casing was placed over the portion that was

under Hwy 84.

With the stormwater sewer drain

and the new watermain in place,

it was time to turn the attention to the

construction of the bridge.

BUILDING THE ABUTMENTS AND PIERS:

Pilings were erected on both sides and within the river.

Abutments were constructed on the

East and the West side of the river.

(West Side Of River Abutment)

East Side Of The River Abutment.

River Pilings & Piers.

POURING FORMS:

East Side Set Pilings.

East Side Cement Filled Pilings.

West Abutment Poured & Backfilled.

ERECTING THE BRIDGE CROSS BEAMS:

 Setting Beams on Piers

~ West Side to Pier #1 ~

Beams Over Piers

~ East to West ~

PREPARING THE DECK:

Row upon row of re-rod was placed across the

beams to create a strong base over which

cement would be poured.

Metal workers labored to "tie" all of the re-rod

together, creating a web of strength that would

structure and hold the cement deck in place.

The deck was ready to be poured.

CURB & SIDEWALKS:

New Curbs and Sidewalks!

Wide sidewalks were

created on both sides

of the new road.

This was a nice change

& a needed improvement.
